About Mr. Brophy
A native of the Chicago area, Michael Brophy has been a resident of the State of Texas since 1979. Mr. Brophy graduated from North Texas State University in 1981, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism “with honors.” After a two-year stint as Assistant News Editor at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Mr. Brophy attended the University of Houston Law Center. In 1985, he embarked upon a legal career that included associations with the oldest and largest law firm in South Texas, a mid-sized litigation boutique in Dallas, and the Houston branch office of an established New York law firm. He founded The Brophy Law Firm in 1996, with a focus upon general civil litigation. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Brophy responded to many calls for utilization of his skills in the Family Law arena.
The Brophy Law Firm has enjoyed a prestigious “AV” practice rating since its inception. Mr. Brophy has been offered listings in the Bar Register of Pre-Eminent Lawyers since 2004, and has has handled cases in State and Federal Courts throughout the State of Texas, from El Paso, to San Antonio, to the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and many areas of East Texas.
In 2007, Mr. Brophy was invited to attend an intensive mediation training course (“Learn from the Masters“) with two of the premier Mediators in the Dallas/Fort Worth market, Sid Stahl and John Estes. Since that time, Mr. Brophy has been involved in dozens of mediations each year, either as a litigant or as a Mediator. And in 2021, Mr. Brophy decided to begin the process of transitioning from his full-time civil litigation practice into a practice dedicated to helping and serving other lawyers and litigants as a Mediator.
In his spare time, Mr. Brophy enjoys spending time traveling, playing competitive sports (basketball at age 64!), running, biking, and SCUBA diving. He has used his athletic pursuits to raise money for such worthy causes as the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Fort Bend Education Foundation, and the Snowdrop Foundation. He is the proud Husband of Terrie Gorney, an activist and organizer in the Fort Bend County philanthropic community; and the proud Father of Ryan Brophy, an aspiring young actor in Los Angeles, California, who shares his passion for music and the arts.
